As Baton Rouge faces new challenges, our dear Capitol is gaining strength by returning to its roots. Under the leadership of East Baton Rouge Parish School Superintendent LaMont Cole – a proud Capitol Middle School alumnus, former teacher, and principal – Capitol Senior High School will relocate from 1000 N. 23rd Street and merge with Capitol Middle School off Gus Young Avenue and Greenwell Springs Road. This is an innovative step forward for our students.

 

Originally opened in 1950 as Capitol Junior-Senior High School on Gus Young Ave., this move marks a meaningful homecoming since the Capitol campus officially divided in 1959. After six decades, the decision to reunite the two schools was made following extensive research and feedback from parents, students, teachers and administrators.

 

The merger will bring numerous benefits, including:

• Incentives for teachers

• Upgraded facilities

• Proven academic programs to attract and retain families

• A smoother transition from middle to high school by keeping students in the same building

A key vision for the rebirthed Capitol High campus will be expanding successful medical programs in partnership with Baton Rouge General Hospital which are already thriving at schools like Park Elementary. Superintendent Cole stated, “We want to make Gus Young Ave. the medical corridor for all students and families in the area.”

 

Capitol High has persevered through decades of change in East Baton Rouge Parish, and this transition will be no different. The tradition of Lion’s Pride will grow stronger because we’ll be returning home to where our school bells first rang 75 years ago.
